This open-access review positions lignin as a promising precursor for porous carbon CO₂ adsorbents. Lignin is the most abundant aromatic biopolymer, with the highest carbon yield (~40%) among biopolymers, and industrial lignin is produced in large quantities (50–70 million tons annually). The article discusses how lignin’s aromatic structure and functionalities enable physical and chemical modification pathways for tailoring pore structure and surface interactions for CO₂ adsorption .
